I love a challenge. I love a physical challenge. But a nutrition challenge? This scares me. I like to eat. I don’t like to feel hungry.
When I was presented with the opportunity to do the Beachbody Ultimate Reset, I immediately realized that not only did I not want to do it, but that I needed to do it. My eating habits were slipping and I needed to get back in control. I needed to create some new habits.
The Beachbody Ultimate Reset is a 21-Day day program, broken into three phases that are designed to:
- Reclaim your body’s natural balance
- Release harmful toxins from your body
- Restore you body back to optimal health
The program is NOT:
- A starvation diet. I ate real, filling and nutritious foods. It was a chance to explore and discover new foods that I may have never tried.
- An abrupt cleanse that’s hard on the body. It was a gradual and natural approach.
- A laxative-based, colon blow. Self-explanatory!
I feel that having a nutrition accountability partner is the most important step in setting yourself up for success. My husband agreed to do the program with me, not realizing how it would have such an impact on us.
We watched the the videos that came with the Ultimate Reset and we even decided to purchase a new stainless set of cookware. We felt that if we had cool things to cook with, our motivation would increase. We were so right about this!
The program is very detailed and is very, very thorough. There is no guessing. You will have a chart reminding you when to take supplements. You will have a shopping list. Be prepared to spend A LOT of time at the grocery store the first week as you’ll be buying thing you may never have heard of and lots of oils and vinegars you may have never used.
The good news is a lot of the staples will last you the entire 21 days and beyond. Each day, your menu is planned for breakfast, lunch and dinner which includes the vegan recipes you will be preparing, along with ideas for a mid-afternoon snack.
You’ll be drinking a lot of water, so be prepared to pee. Speaking of water, you’ll be drinking only distilled water. No tap, bottled, etc. Distilled. One gallon a day! Did I mention you will pee a lot?
Prior to starting the Reset, I would HIGHLY recommend weaning yourself of caffeine. I don’t like to have headaches and unless you rid your body of caffeine, you will experience them for the first few days. So do yourself a favor and cut the coffee habit now. You will be so thankful.
The first week you will be weaning yourself off of animal proteins and dairy. I have had a non-dairy diet for a couple years so I supplemented Vegan Tropical Shakeology when the menu called for yogurt.
I was a bit nervous to eliminate chicken from my diet, but I had been considering going vegan for some time and this was the perfect opportunity.
I felt hungry during the first few days and I truly believe it was more emotional hunger than actually having a physical desire for food. I missed the habits I had formed. I missed eating whenever I wanted. I missed my dark chocolate.
The most difficult adjustment for me was no exercise. Sweating is what makes me feel alive. Having a great knock me down workout is what gives me the energy I need throughout the day. So having to give that up is truly like taking away the blankey from the child. It was hard for me to process that rest is good. I found my peace after the first week and settled into doing P90X2 yoga daily. Movement is suggested. Strenuous activity is not recommended at all.
As the days passed, the hunger subsided. We spent a lot of time in the kitchen. A LOT. But there is something to be said about preparing your foods from scratch. It creates a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment and the food is amazing!! I created these new habits and I discovered so many things I never thought would happen.
I learned that I love to cook! I’m a little embarrassed to admit, but other than leftovers, I have never packed my husband’s lunch. I’m doing that now. There is something so traditional about preparing everything from scratch and packing it containers. So much love goes into the process. I’m focusing on the beauty of food and it is a true statement of my love to prepare this for him. My thoughts about food were very different before the Reset.
I will no longer ever buy a dressing off the shelf after learning how to create the most fantastic blends from scratch. The aroma alone is simply amazing. Fruit has never tasted so fresh. Food just tastes better when it is pretty and colorful, exactly what is intended for our bodies.
The Reset wasn’t about extreme weight loss for us. I did lose weight (7 pounds total), lowered my cholesterol (153 to 141) and lowered my triglycerides (41 – 33), but the Qualitative results far outweighed and quantitative statistics.
- I have a new love and respect for vegan cooking.
- My horrible gum chewing habit is completely gone.
- I no longer rely on caffeine.
- I have a much deeper sense for traditional value for family dinners.
- I practice conscious eating.
- I have a renewed love for my husband.
It is true that habits are formed in 21 days. It’s been nearly two months since we completed the Reset and today I still am creating a weekly menu, complete with all vegan recipes, many of which include our favorites from the Reset.
