30-Day Shakeology Challenge Results

susan taylorI was invited to join Rhonda’s 30-day Shakeology Challenge in December 2011. I was a little skeptical at first because I thought the cost was a little high. I also wondered how one shake could replace an entire meal.  I chose the chocolate flavor because chocolate is a daily part of my life. I was pleasantly surprised with the first taste. It was rich, creamy, and satisfied my chocolate craving. The shake also left me feeling very full. My usual second breakfast hunger pains diminished. My goal during the challenge was not to lose weight.  I was simply trying to avoid the typical holiday gain. I couldn’t believe that I ended up losing 2.5 pounds.

Once the challenge ended, I decided to keep ordering Shakeology. The cost is worth every penny. It averages to about $4.50 a day. That is less expensive than having breakfast or lunch out. The shakes also provide a crazy amount of nutrients. It’s a lot more than I was getting with my previous breakfast choices.

What is a Challenge Group?

I have found that so many people truly want to get results.  Most people even get motivated at some point to start a new program, but too often the missing ingredient is accountability.  Without an incentive or someone holding you accountable to your workouts, the motivation fades, excuses take over and before you know it, you’re back to your same old routine “of out of shapeness”!


Running and Insanity

Does Insanity make you a better runner?  How can I incorporate running and Insanity into my fitness schedule?  These are two questions I get quite often and I can assure you that you will become a better runner by incorporating Insanity into your running schedule and I have a system that has worked well for me.

The first question you must ask yourself is: What is your running goal right now?  Are you training to run a marathon?  Do you want to be a faster runner?  Are you running to stay in shape?  These answers are important to creating your Insanity / Running hybrid schedule.

When I was training for a marathon, running was the focus of my schedule and I used Insanity as cross-training a couple days a week.  In the running off-season, I merely flip this schedule.  Insanity is my focus six days a week and I run a couple days a week just to maintain a solid running base of about five miles per run.

I cannot stress how important it is to incorporate some type of cross-training into your running schedule.  It will not keep your routine new and fresh, it will help you stay injury free, build a strong core and become an overall better and faster runner!  Who doesn’t want that?

Prior to May 2010, I ran a lot but never really lost any weight and was not able to get any faster.  I was an average runner with average goals.  Since incorporating Insanity and numerous other Beachbody workout programs into my regular workout schedule, I took 16 minutes off my previous marathon PR and qualified for The Boston Marathon.  I’ve become leaner, faster and much more efficient.

The Insanity Elite Nutrition Guide has helped me get my diet under control and provided my body the necessary fuel for better and more effective runs.  This detailed, yet simplified nutrition plan, which includes having Shakeology daily, has been the key and essential component of making this hybrid work.  Becoming a faster and better runner is not just about running more.  It’s about proper nutrition, effective cross-training and creating a powerful mix to have a successful running season.

It’s the simple things in life that really are the most important – good health, loving relationships and meaningful spirituality. I’m extremely passionate about fitness and I love to push myself to my limits.

I have a really amazing husband. He’s a selfless man and dedicated father. Together we have two fantastic boys with dynamic and contrasting personalities who always keep me on my toes. Keelan is my peaceful phlegmatic and compassionate soul. Jackson is my actor and comedian and always keeps us laughing. My boys are my love and they are what motivate me to work hard each day and to be a better person. I learn so much from all three of them every single day.

Being healthy and living a very active life are not just my lifestyle, it’s who I am and what I represent. I believe anything worth having is worth the effort! When it comes to fitness, I’m a very goal-oriented individual, always looking for a new challenge. Hard work and dedication will produce fantastic results, thus improving your overall quality of life.

Prior to May 2010, I would have considered myself fit and healthy. I did the things I was supposed to do. I ate healthy foods. I went to the gym, ran and attended as many yoga classes as I could possibly fit into my schedule. But my clothes were tight and I was not motivated by my workouts.

My brother suggested I try the Beachbody INSANITY workout, since it was designed for people like me, those who like a kick in the butt workout at a high intensity level. At first I was skeptical and my ego told me I’m better than home dvd workout programs. I’d witnessed the success he had with P90X, so I agreed to give it try.

I started INSANITY on May 1, 2010 and was immediately humbled. It wasn’t just another home DVD. This was by far the hardest workout I had ever done, and I’ve tried them all. I decided that if I was going to do it right, I was going to completely commit myself to the program and the nutrition plan. I kept a food journal and followed the workouts and nutrition plan as if I’d designed them. I immediately started to lose weight. In all my previous workouts, I would either maintain or gain, but I never lost weight.  I would always fall into the trap that as long as I was working hard, it didn’t matter the amount I was eating.

After Month One, I lost seven pounds and noticed quite a difference in my waistline. It became tighter as my pants became looser. At the end of Month Two, I was down 10 pounds and lost even more inches off my waist. My body fat dropped 4-5% and it completely changed my mindset about home dvd programs.

Being a runner, the interval training helped me get faster and my endurance increased dramatically. I started taking Shakeology in September 2010 and my weight once again started to drop. I’ve gone down a size in my pants. I have so much energy throughout the day, even after a hard workout and I’m happier than I’ve ever been.

It has changed my attitude, my spirit and motivated me to be very successful in all aspects of my life. I’m in the best shape of my life at age 37. I’ve been so inspired by both my brother and my success that I became a coach to motivate others to be successful as well.  My brother presented me with a wonderful gift when he introduced me to Beachbody. It has truly changed who I am.

I recently had an epiphany while driving.  I envisioned myself working directly with a man I have admired for the past two years, Craig Holiday.  I thought if I could just work directly with him and soak in his wisdom, I would grow so much as a person and really move in the right direction towards my goals.

When I got home, I opened my email to an invitation from none other than Craig Holiday himself to be a part of a 12-week series entitled, “Rhino Renegade”.  Craig regularly uses the rhino as his symbol of success and I see it a metaphor of putting my head down, kicking aside the dirt and facing whatever obstacle comes to me with courage and conviction.

I immediately felt that pit in my stomach.   You know the one that stirs up the fear and anxiety and self-doubt.  But instead of succumbing to its force, I signed up with zero hesitation.  I want to grow as a person.  I want to fulfill my dreams.  I want to change not just my life, but those that surround me.  I needed this course.

The first week is all about facing fears.  It took a lot of self-reflection to really understand what limits I place on myself from negative self-talk and fear of failure.  I learned that I’m not necessarily fearful of success, but I hold this self-doubt that I am not worthy of it.  I feel in many aspects of my life, I haven’t held up my end of the stick by showing up the way I should financially, spiritually and as a mother and wife and I have incredible guilt associated with it.

I often have negative self-talk about the way I look and instead of telling myself that I am beautiful, I find myself negatively articulating comments about my minute physical flaws and my inherent personality traits.  Rather than finding beauty, I will compare myself to others in an unfair or unjust way.  I place these uncompromising demands on my character to be someone I am not.

When I began to discover all the limiting behaviors I place on myself, I realized that there is no way I can progress. Unless I start to replace this self-doubt and comparison to others with acceptance of where I am today, then and only then will I know and understand that I am worthy.  Or as Craig would say, “STOP IT” when it comes to putting these ridiculous demands and comparisons on myself.

It’s important to not only recognize the limits we place on ourselves, but to then recognize our behavioral patterns that trigger these fears and self-doubt.  It’s all a process of cleaning out the junk first so we can organize our lives to move forward to a life that we deserve.

The power of this exercise is incredible.  When we know what we do to limit ourselves, we can learn to do better.  We become aware of the patterns that put us in the downward spiral instead of the moving us forward in an ascending motion to be great.

I’m so excited about the next couple of months as I go farther into this process of truly unveiling the power of my potential.   Instead of reflecting as I often have in the past of what I’m not or what I cannot be, I’m discovering the true me.  I know for sure that I have incredible heart to move others and people trust me, that I am a leader and I have purpose and passion to make an incredible impact on many and  I know that what I believe, I absolutely know I can achieve.

We all have fears.  We all have made mistakes and we will continue to make mistakes, but we also all have a purpose.  We all deserve to live a life that full of happiness and we have the power to sing the song that is inside of our hearts. Thank you Craig Holiday for allowing me to see the true potential in myself..
